Sheldon Rempal - Los Angeles Kings - NHL/AHL
I've been training with Doug Brown over the past seven summers, I started with him while playing midget AA hockey, where he took me to a level where I was able to begin my junior career in the BCHL. From there I was able to obtain a Division 1 scholarship to Clarkson University where I played for 2 years before being offered multiple contracts in the National Hockey League.
The advancements in my career would not have been possible without the endless dedication that was put in during my off-season conditioning with Doug. Some things that stand out to me regarding Doug is his preparation, I never came into the gym without a plan. Prior to our workouts there was always a clear outline what the goal was for the day. We don't workout just to get a sweat, we workout for precise outcomes on what were both looking for. He was excellent at explaining an exercise to me and how it was going to benefit me in the long run. Another attribute that Doug is very strong with is motivating his athletes. every trainer has there own way of motivating there athletes, but for me I've never had another trainer throughout my hockey career that motivates more then Doug does.
Not only is Doug Brown a professional in his respective job type, he's also one of my close friends. Through the years we've built a relationship that will take me through the rest of my life. He's taken me from midget AA quadrant hockey in Calgary, all the way to the NHL. I could not be in the position I am in today without his help and support, in which i do not take for granted as I want to continue to get better and succeed.
John Edwardh - Adirondack Thunder - AHL/ECHL
For the past 8 years, starting with the Buffs, Okotoks Oilers, Umass-Lowell and now with the Adirondack Thunder I have been working with Doug Brown to help with my strength and conditioning during the summer.
Every summer I have worked with Doug, we have outlined goals that are specific to myself and what type of player I am. I found this very beneficial because I was able to improve every summer, and therefore improve every year on the ice. One thing that we have been working on the past couple summers is explosiveness and I feel like I have improved in this area enough to be able to compete confidently at the NCAA D1 level and now early into my professional career. Another area we focus on is doing the work the right way. This includes proper form and technique so that I am getting the most out of every lift. This mind set also translates to the ice, as I believe that I have developed into a more detail oriented player and this is in large part due to the details I have developed with Doug in the gym.
Characteristics that also come to mind are that the workouts are well organized throughout the week, meaning that everyday there is usually a different objective that I’m supposed to get out of the lift. The most important attribute I believe is that not only Doug is a very easy person to work with but also get along with. We’ve had a personal relationship for 8 years now and I think that is beneficial in getting the most out of myself as a hockey player.
Mitch Collett - Holy Cross University - NCAA Hockey
Working with Doug for over 3 years has been great. He clearly understands how the body functions, and knew exactly how to improve my fitness, while tailoring it to my specific needs as a hockey player. He also identified my strengths and weaknesses, and clearly illustrated the improvements I made under his training. I certainly would not have been prepared for the physical demands of college hockey without Doug’s help. On top of all that, he is a pleasure to work with, and turned the gym into a place that I genuinely enjoyed every day.
